WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR REFRIGERATOR

BY MARTIN AMADO ON JUNE 13TH, 2017

The warm summer months can put a strain on your refrigerator. Recognizing there’s a problem before it gets worse and taking next steps can save you the stress of having your unit breakdown unexpectedly, and the mad panic that can set in when your refrigerator stops working.

Here are a few tips to help you determine what to do if you see signs of trouble.

DIY

  • Strange Noises: When you hear strange noises, it may just be sign that your refrigerator is working extra hard cooling warm groceries. Loud sounds generally do not affect the operation of your refrigerator.
  • Leaks: If you notice a leak, it may be a frozen drain. Try unplugging your refrigerator overnight see if the drain will thaw out. Clear blockages with warm water and a turkey baster. If the drain looks fine and the fridge is still leaking, call for service.

PROFESSIONAL REPAIR

  • Water/Ice Dispenser: If the water or ice dispenser stops working, try replacing the water filter and resetting the temperature to factory settings. If this doesn’t work, it could mean a damaged water supply – time to call in the pros!
  • Frost Buildup: A thick coat of frost buildup in your freezer is a sure sign to call a technician for help.
  • LED Light: If your refrigerator uses an LED light and it goes out, you’ll likely need a technician’s help to replace it.

REPLACE

  • Energy efficiency has come a long way in recent years. If your fridge is more than ten years old, it may be worth buying a new more energy-efficient model.
  • If you start to notice food spoiling faster than it should, it’s time to upgrade!
  • When the refrigerator’s “humming” stops, it probably means the compressor has stopped working – a definite sign that you should think about replacing your refrigerator.
