Many consider the kitchen to be the heart of the home. If yours is looking a bit tired and dated, here are some tips to add more spice back into the décor.

What makes a gourmet kitchen stand out from the rest are the details and finishes.  This doesn’t mean you have to go the custom route either.  You can update any kitchen and save money in the process with in-stock cabinets from a big box store.  For example, a shaker door in white is a transitional style that is always on trend.  What will make the difference are the hardware, backsplash and appliances you choose to complete the renovation.

Backsplashes in mosaic and glass tiles are the latest design trends that will give your kitchen a modern look. The good news is that it’s a simple DIY weekend project!  The tiles are readily available at any home improvement store in 12x12 sections and you can make a dramatic change without spending too much since the area between the upper cabinets and countertop is usually small to begin with.

Finally, the best investment you can make in a kitchen is updating the appliances, light fixtures and faucets.  Start small with a new faucet that conserves less water and makes your sink area look brand new, then work your way up to the appliances, which I consider to be the jewelry of the kitchen.  Keep the same finish throughout the hardware and appliances for a designer look.  In addition to the main light fixture, I love the look of pendants above an island or counter as accent lighting.  Look for features that help you save energy and offer the latest technology, which will save you money in the long-run.
