Family Fun Project

A vertical garden is the perfect DIY project for the whole family.  It’s a great way to bring a bit of the outdoors in and have fun doing it.

Step 1: Start by preparing the “wall” for your garden. Using repurposed doors as wall art are a fun and stylish trend. I  distressed the door to give the project a rustic look.  Paint it a bright fresh color.  Blues, greens, and yellows will pair especially well with the flowers.  I went with a light blue.

Step 2: Once the door was painted, I used a power sander to wear out some areas of the door to give it the distressed look.  While this project is for the whole family, make sure an adult handles this step. Another option to create the same effect is to use sheets of sandpaper or sanding blocks.

Step 3: When you’re happy with the look of your wall, drill small pilot holes in each spot where you want one of the planters to hang.  Screw a hook eye into each hole.

Step 4: Now it’s time to move on to the planters.  Small metal buckets from your nearest craft store are perfect.  The kids will have fun painting the buckets. They can be solid colors or have pictures or messages.  Once the paint is dry,  adults can step in again and drill a small hole at the top of each bucket. Stick small S-shaped hooks through the holes so the buckets hang from the screw eyes.

Step 5: Now the kids can go wild with the rest of the decorations. Scrapbooking stickers and ribbons always look great and are incredibly easy. Once they’re done decorating, you’re ready to plant.  Add soil and plant your favorite flowers.  You can use grown flowers or try planting seeds so you can watch the flowers grow.

Step 6: Hang the buckets on the door and place in a location that gets plenty of sunlight. Remember to water the plants  regularly and enjoy your creation.

Happy gardening everyone!
