MARTIN's WORKSHOP

BACKYARD BIRD SANCTUARY

MAY 1ST, 2017

Spring has sprung, and everywhere you look nature is blooming and coming to life!  Bring the energy of the season to your backyard with your own personal bird sanctuary.  This is a fun project that is sure to bring great rewards.

Start by doing some research on local species to figure out which types of birds you want to attract. Different species prefer different types of bird feeders and feed. For example, thistle feeders are perfect for finches, hopper feeders attract larger birds while hummingbirds love nectar feeders.  There is so much information available online for all you bird lovers or you can head to your nearest bird specialty store to talk to an expert.

A birdbath is a great ornamental feature and is also beneficial as it helps birds to keep their feathers clean and protects them while flying and from the elements.  I especially like birdbaths that have moving water since they attract birds, and the sounds are soothing to us humans!

Now you just need a comfy spot where you can relax and enjoy watching the birds flock to your feeders. Your own personal sanctuary! A hammock is a great choice for enjoying the warm weather. Decorate with colorful throw pillows to add color and personal flair.

Finish the project with a small side table next to the hammock to place your books, binoculars, and cool spring-time refreshments. And if you suffer from allergies, don’t forget to take your Flonase® Sensimist™ daily to protect against itchy watery eyes, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing.  You don’t want to scare away the birds!

Enjoy the spring and happy bird watching!
