Go for the Gold

Gold accessories and accents provide an instant elegance and glamor, endowing even a modest room with a sense of ease and style.

How to decorate with gold? Take these design cues from top designers:

Gold provides contrast. “In every room of the house there should be surprises and punctuation marks,” says designer Jonathan Adler, who often appoints his rooms with multiple glittering gold accessories.

Gold is elevating. “Surround yourself with materials that make you happy,” designer Kelly Wearstler writes. “Gold can add richness to any lifestyle. Mix gold in any room: a kitchen backsplash, a gold-dipped slipper tub, a gold-leaf antique bed.”

Antiqued, gold suggests old wealth; bright and dazzling, it announces modern luxury “My grandmother Estee was an amazing woman,” recalls designer Aerin Lauder, in a video promoting her new home line. “She is the first person who taught me that gold is a neutral.”

Gold is always fascinating. “A neutral room does not have to be a bore,” Wearstler writes. “Create contrast with the use of metallics, a striking piece of art or sculpture, tactile rugs, textiles or patterns.”
